Living-Learning for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors

Living-learning communities allow students with common interests to live together and share real-world learning experiences. Regardless of whether or not the living-learning community for upper-class students has an associated course, these communities allow students to get involved with their academics on a deeper level.

Learning Outside of the Classroom

We know that learning occurs both inside and outside the classroom. Living-learning communities take the traditional coursework, reading, and research in class and add experiential opportunities out of class to further enhance learning. These experiential learning opportunities may include community-based learning, attending lectures, participating in community service, attending cultural events and performances, among others. These opportunities occur both on and off campus in Richmond, Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area.

Community of Students

Living together in a co-ed residence hall and community offers a range of opportunities for students of differing backgrounds to interact with each other. Students in a living-learning community live together in a designated area of the residence hall, creating an environment of active and engaged students sharing their experiences with one another.

Students have social opportunities within their living-learning community and opportunities to travel off campus. Students will have their comfort zone challenged and be exposed to new thoughts, ideas, and experiences.

Connection with Faculty

Each living-learning community is led by dedicated and talented faculty members who prepare the experiential learning components and provide opportunities for students to combine their academic and residential experience.

Students have the opportunity to interact with the faculty members both formally and informally through class, programs, and events. In addition to faculty, students have the support of student development professionals from a variety of offices throughout the year.
