Community Travel
To help students connect what they are learning in the classroom, the Geography of the James River Watershed community traveled to Portland, Oregon the week prior to the academic year beginning. These experiences add context, as well as opportunities for students to compare watersheds in Oregon to the watershed of the James River.
Portland, Oregon
August 15–19, 2016
While in Portland, students:
- Visited the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest
- Kayak on the Willamette River and explore Ross Island
- Hike Lookout Creek Old-Growth Trail
- Visit and hike Carpenter Mountain
- Whitewater rafting on the McKenzie River
- Visit and tour Bonneville Dam
- Hike Bridal Veil Falls State Park
