Community Travel
To experience directly what students are learning in the classroom, the Self-Discover and Social Change community will travel to Vancouver, Canada over Fall Break.
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Fall Break
Students will stay in the Downtown Eastside (DTE) and see first hand the social issues of that neighborhood by interacting with local organizations to integrate theory and practice of social engagement. They will also contrast that other parts of Vancouver, to see the "two Vancouvers," and how social issues are relegated to a neighborhood.
Highlights from the trip, include:
- Walking tour of the DTE
- Participating in Vancouver's Homeless Week exhibition
- Meeting with doctors and nurses at Insite
- Meet with community partners within the DTE, like Mission Possible, Servant Partners, Jacob's Well, and First United Church
- Celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving by serving Thanksgiving dinner to residents of the DTE
- Attend a pow-wow of the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society
- Visit Grouse Mountain
While students are traveling and staying in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Vancouver, it remains a very safe experience for students. Precautions are taken to ensure students' safety.
